A Critique of â€Å"Thank You for Smoking. . .?" Peter Brimelow is a senior editor for Forbes magazine. The essay was written taken from Forbes magazine (July 4, 1994). Peter Brimelow’s â€Å"Thank You for Smoking† is a misleading argument which has very little precise evidence and illustrates a weak argument. The essay is about how smoking in some small ways, can be good for you. (Brimelow). In his claim it sounds like he isn’t sure of it himself because he used â€Å"might be† and â€Å"some† which are not strong argumentative words. When stating a major claim it has to be strong and get the message clear. It is supported by logic and reason, not by emotional rhetoric. (Clark 5). Brimelow’s rebuttal talks about the Surgeon General and how he has determined smoking is not at all dangerous to your health. A rebuttal points out instances in which the claim or warrant might not be true or ways the audience might object to what the author is arguing. He goes on to say that 400,000 deaths are related to smoking each year. His rebuttal to this is comparing smoking with driving. He goes on to say that driving causes 40,000 deaths in one year. These two numbers comparing the number of deaths caused my smoking and car accidents are not even close to comparison. Another car can collide with them or bad roads can cause accidents, while smoking is totally preventable and can be controlled by the person. Value is what the author believes strongly in and in this essay freedom is Brimelow’s value stated. I think it was clever using freedom to compare because it appeals to people and it gets their attention and keeps it. He says driving cars is dangerous and people have the freedom to drive cars then they should have the freedom to smoke where they want. Is it the smoker’s right to come into a room full of non-smokers and light up a cigarette? Should all the non-smokers have to bear the smoke or have to leave because they have a right to smoke anywhere they want. Smokers have the right to smoke but only where smoking is permitted. If they want to harm themselves let them do it alone and not harm people who want to breathe clean air.

Parents Importance to A Childs Life

Parents play a very important role in the lives of their children. They have to build a solid foundation for their kids in order for them to have a successful and rewarding life. The foundation needs to be built at an early age, and needs to keep being built throughout the child†s early adolescence. The foundation of an individual can be broken down into several different parts, such as morals, religious beliefs, political standpoints, and education, to name a few. Morals are probably the most import part in an individual†s life. They define right from wrong and good from bad. Crime is often times attributed to the lack of morals that a person has. Criminals are, in many cases, results of broken homes or families, where morals where not properly taught by the parents. When this particular part of the foundation is missing, a person can become corrupt. The parents really need to focus in on teaching their children morals, because it will shape the character of the individual and help him to become a better person. These morals will help guide the child throughout their lifetime. The crime rate would be considerably lower in the world if this crucial piece of the foundation is properly assembled. Parents can also influence the religious beliefs of the child. This is also another very important thing for a child to understand and learn. Religion may give the child someone or something to pray to when in a time of need. It also will give the child a sense of hope and faith. Without hope and faith, the child may find himself to be lost and confused, and religion will hopefully shed light on the right path and help to make better life decisions. Political standpoints are often times influenced by the child†s parents. For example, if both parents are democrats, there is a likely chance that when the child grows old enough to vote and participate in the political aspects of his country, that he will become a democratic voter. This is more of an example of an influence that parents have on their children. Early childhood education is an excellent opportunity for the child to build his character and present himself as an intelligent person. Knowledge will help the child in the future in many ways, including job interviews. When applying for a job, the employer can usually tell if the person has been well educated and has a good personality; this early education will really help the child to shine in the work force and give him an upper-hand on another person who may have received less education. A solid and strong foundation is such an important part of and individual. If a person was brought up under good conditions and taught manners and morals, then he will grow to be a well-respected gentleman. The life he will lead will be much more enjoyable and successful if the parents do their part in helping him build this foundation to success.(506)

It is natural that God made some people naturally beautiful than others in face, color, body and in physical appearance but this is only the outer beauty that can attract anyone by its features while Inner beauty is some thing inside a person or a body, most of the times it does not show up but it exists in person’s heart and soul. Its something inside a person. For most people, outer beauty is easily created by means of a temporary camouflage of creams, scents, ointments, styles, and various kinds of outer wrappings. The true beauty of a person is not in the face, it is the light in the heart. â€Å"True beauty shi nes through, for the wise can see through the superficiality of perfect skin, or hidebound social judgments.† Inner beauty for a person is to know their strengths and live with them. Confidence is a natural consequence. But it is also inspiringto see the beauty in life itself. Outer beauty is something one is born with, while innerbeauty is a gift to one’s self. We may not be able to ‘see’ inner beauty in a person, but wecan definitely ‘feel’ it. A person with an inner beauty always touches people aroundthem. I nner strength is reflected in this inner beauty which comes from unconditional faith in god, courage of conviction, positive attitude and a spirit that refuses to get flattened out by the ups and downs of life. What you are when you are just being yourself, that is inner beauty. It is reflected in how one talks to members of your family or your domestic help. It is your concern for people, your understanding of them, and your sensitivity to their feelings. A person who comes close to embodying these qualities is the one who is really beautiful. One should constantly try to be a ‘beautiful’ person, reinventing one’s self through life’s manifold experiences. Where as if you rely upon the appearance of Outer Beauty alone in their interpersonal relationships, usually have very little, if anything else, to bring into their relationships. And once their  temporary and fleeting illusion of Outer Beauty finally vanishes, their unfulfilled and limited true character is all that they have left. Inner Beauty is an Untarnishable and permanent truth. It is the purest expression of beauty that the soul has to offer. While Outer Beauty is but a temporary and fleeting illusion, Outer Beauty can be used to gain instant and temporary gratification in the physical realm, Inner Beauty is Spiritual Magic which enables the person who possesses it to enjoy permanent contentment in all realms: physical, mental, and spiritual. Inner Beauty is a warm and hypnotic â€Å"glow† which radiates from a magical ember that burns deep within the person who possesses it. Inner Beauty is a Divine Essence which cannot be manufactured. And, it is amazing how Inner Beauty can make an â€Å"average looking† person radiate with a magnetic glow and a heart-stopping presence. It is a permanent Quality which makes this individual interesting, desirable, trustworthy, and welcome. Conclusion Then we come to the conclusion â€Å"what’s beautiful? To be yourself-deeply and totally- is the essential. Not to disfigure yourself in the name of ‘beauty’ because everyone else is doing so. How can you know who you are, if you look like everyone else? Inner beauty implies that is just not outward beauty, but a kind of aura- call it spiritual or otherwise- that you have that affects you and people around you.
